Race Article

I think this is a pretty approachable interview on the race topic we touched upon on Friday.
We can discuss this more when we delve into the topic of Evolution and whether in our country there is a significant difference between Original Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, Indian Americans, Central and South Americans and European Americans in terms of genes, diseases and other characteristics.

Sorry for the delay...

Chapter 12 and 13 Questions:

Explain the evolution of mitosis by describing the various manifestations of divisions shown in figure 12.13.

Describe the Johnson and Rao experiment, including their hypothesis, the experimental design, results and conclusions.

Explain the relationship between cyclin, kinases and CDKs.  What are the roles of each?  Using MPF as an example, explain how the cell cycle is controlled.

Describe how do cancer cells differ from normal cells?

Explain how 1) crossing over, 2) independent assortment of alleles and3)  random fertilization contribute to genetic diversity and how genetic diversity contributes to the evolution of a species.  Be sure to define all three.

Jump Start on Chapter 7

If any of you want to get a jump start on chapter 7, stop by for tomorrow's notes.  I'll be here at break and after school (lunch is the GSA meeting).

Also, there are supplemental lectures to help you with both Ch. 6 and Ch. 7 on the right-hand side of this blog.

Test is still Monday- 48 multiple choice, 2 short answers. 60 points and covers only the two chapters 6 and 7.

Friday's Test

For the first time EVER on ANY AP Biology test, no grade was below a 50% (usually they go all the way down to 30 % or lower).  If you all keep improving, there will be a lot of A's and B's this semester!  I was most impressed with your ability to answer the essay question.  I know the M/C were brutal, so plan on spending time at the end of access on Wednesday going over the test and learning about a possible retake opportunity.

Here was the breakdown:

7 F's 7 D's 4 C's 1 B.

My plan is to finish your grades today.  I'm home with the two kids alone, so I might put grades in a little sporadically.  Thanks for your understanding.

Get a head-start on weekend work!

Hi Everyone.  Your homework this weekend is to read chapter 4.  Here are the discussion (no turnitin.com) questions I wrote so far (final copy will be handed out on Friday):

  1. Why is carbon the basis for life on Earth?
  2. What other elements are in abundance in living organisms?
  3. What was vitalism?  how does it contrast with mechanism?
  4. What was the Miller-Urey experiment?  Be able to explain the diagram of their apparatus.
  5. Review covalent bonds.
  6. What types of bonds does carbon form?  How do these bonds affect the final structure of a molecule (fig. 4.3)?
  7. Review how we find the valence of an atom and memorize the valences in fig 4.4.
  8. What is a hydrocarbon?  What gives hydrocarbons their various properties?
  9. Know how to define the three kinds of isomers.

More on Friday!
